Reddit Search Traffic Drop: What It Means for Marketers

Reddit lost over 1 million Google visits a week in October and plans a login wall. What the drop means for brands, AI answers and your Reddit marketing plans.

In short: Treat Reddit as a community and an ad channel, not as free search reach you can count on. Check how much of your traffic and brand visibility runs through Reddit threads, keep your own site the best answer for your key questions and watch how a login wall changes what Google and AI tools can see.

Overview

Reddit search traffic fell hard this fall, and Reddit says Google's AI answers are a big reason. In October, the site averaged more than 1 million fewer search visits each week. Its US daily users dropped for the year, and its stock had its worst day ever.

Reddit's answer is a big one. It plans to test a version of the site that you can't read without logging in. That would end one of the last big places on the web where anyone could read freely.

The Reddit search traffic drop matters well beyond Reddit. Reddit threads rank in Google for many "best X for Y" and product questions, and AI tools cite Reddit more than almost any other site. So if Reddit search traffic and Reddit access change, your brand's visibility may change too. Maybe a lot.

This guide covers what Reddit reported, what it plans and what marketers should do now. Disclosure: Vanaxity sells SEO, GEO and AEO services, so we have a stake in this topic. We cite third-party data, label our own math and don't give investment advice.

Key takeaways

  • Reddit said search referrals fell sharply in the third quarter of 2026, and in October they ran more than 1 million a week below normal on average.
  • US daily active uniques fell 2% from a year earlier, to 50.7 million. Logged-out US readers fell 4%.
  • Global daily users still grew 12%, to 130.3 million, but Reddit warned they could fall by a low double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter.
  • CEO Steve Huffman said Google's AI Mode doesn't send traffic to Reddit or, as far as he knows, to anyone.
  • Reddit will test a logged-in-only experience in some markets outside the US this quarter.
  • The stock fell 29.22% on October 30, its worst day since its 2024 listing, even though revenue and earnings beat forecasts.

User numbers come from Reddit's third-quarter 2026 shareholder letter. Daily active uniques count people who visit Reddit on a given day, logged in or not. Reddit didn't publish a total for search referrals, only the weekly drop.

What happened to Reddit search traffic?

Reddit reported its third-quarter results on October 29, 2026. In its shareholder letter, it said search referral traffic was down meaningfully in the quarter, which is careful company language for a drop big enough to change its outlook. The decline sped up later in the quarter and kept going into October.

In October alone, Reddit said search traffic dropped by more than 1 million referrals a week on average. A referral here means a visit that starts on a search engine and lands on Reddit. Most of those visits come from Google.

The hit landed hardest on people who read Reddit without an account, on the web. Some of it also reached logged-in users and app users, Reddit said. These are the readers who often find a thread through Google, read the answer and leave.

Reddit didn't say how much of the drop came from Google's AI features as opposed to other changes, but it named those features as the main cause, and its CEO was blunt about them on the call.

Why Google AI Mode cuts Reddit search traffic

Google now answers many questions at the top of the page, with AI Overviews and with AI Mode, its chat-style search. These answers often draw on forum posts, including Reddit threads. The searcher gets a summary and may never click through.

On the earnings call, Huffman said "AI Mode does not drive traffic, not for us and not to anybody" as far as he knows. He also said Google's relationship with the rest of the web has shifted, and that AI answers at the very least push other sites further down the page.

That's one company's view, and it isn't a full measure of the web. Google has long said its AI features still send people to websites, and we found no public reply from Google to Huffman's claim as of October 31. Still, Reddit's own numbers back up its point for Reddit.

There's an irony here too. Google pays Reddit to use its content for AI. Reuters reported in February 2024 that the deal was worth about $60 million a year, a figure neither company confirmed. So Reddit content helps power the very answers that now keep readers on Google.

Where Reddit search traffic fell: US readers without accounts

The split in Reddit's numbers tells the story. US readers without an account fell, while logged-in US users grew a little. International users of both kinds grew fast: logged-out readers rose from 37.3 million to 49.5 million and logged-in users from 27.1 million to 30.1 million. Reddit has credited machine-translated threads for much of that growth in past quarters.

Look closer. Logged-out US readers fell from 28.5 million to 27.3 million a day, while logged-in US users rose from 23.1 million to 23.4 million. Total US daily users fell from 53.2 million in the second quarter to 50.7 million, a drop of about 4.7% in three months, by our math.

Logged-in and app users matter most to Reddit's business. Huffman said they bring in more than 80% of its revenue, and both groups grew from the second quarter. That's why Reddit is willing to lose some casual readers to gain more signed-in ones.

Reddit's plan: a logged-in wall

For most of its history, anyone could read Reddit without an account. Huffman described it as the last major platform with almost fully open access for logged-out readers, a stance he says he defended for years.

That's now changing. Reddit says shifting to a logged-in-only experience is key to keeping the new users it gains. It will begin testing this in select markets outside the US in the fourth quarter of 2026. The results will shape a version of logged-in-only Reddit for the whole world.

Reddit gave three reasons on the call:

  • Engagement: people who log in read more, post more and come back more often than people who drop in from a search.
  • Ads: logged-in users can be shown better targeted ads, and they already bring in most of the money.
  • Data: Huffman said most of the scraping of Reddit content happens through logged-out access, and a login wall protects the data that Reddit sells to AI companies.

Huffman admitted there are trade-offs. In his words, as reported by Yahoo Finance, Reddit will likely be trading reach for engagement. Fewer people may see Reddit content, but those who do may stay longer.

Why the stock fell 29% after a strong quarter

The numbers themselves looked good. Revenue rose 53% to $895 million, and earnings came in at $1.40 a share, against about $1.33 expected, per Yahoo Finance. Ad revenue grew 54% to $847 million.

Investors cared more about the future of Reddit search traffic. Reddit guided fourth-quarter revenue to $1.00 billion to $1.03 billion, below the roughly $1.05 billion analysts expected. Add the warning on users and the login wall, and the stock fell 29.22% on October 30, per CNBC.

It closed at $91.73, down from $129.60, its worst day since its 2024 listing. The previous worst was a 20.99% drop on July 31, and after this one at least 11 brokerages cut their price targets on the stock, according to Reuters.

We report the stock move because it shows how seriously investors take the search shift. Not stock advice. For marketers, the useful signal is the traffic data, not the share price.

What the Reddit search traffic drop means for brands

Many brands get found through Reddit without ever posting there. Someone searches "best running shoes for flat feet" and clicks a Reddit thread. That thread names three brands, and the one with the most honest praise from real users is often the one that wins the sale in the end.

If fewer people click those threads, Reddit search traffic falls and that path gets weaker. The searcher may read an AI summary instead. Your brand may still be named in it, but the reader never sees the full thread, the photos or the honest back-and-forth.

A login wall could make it weaker still. If outside readers can't see threads without signing up, many will turn back. Reddit hasn't said how a login wall would treat search engines and AI crawlers, so it's too early to know what Google will still be able to show.

Here's what to look at first:

  • How much of your referral traffic comes from reddit.com today, and whether it's falling.
  • Which of your key product searches show a Reddit thread on page one of Google.
  • What those threads say about you and your rivals.
  • Whether AI answers for those searches quote Reddit, your site or someone else.

Will Reddit still show up in AI answers?

Right now, Reddit is one of the most cited sources in AI search, which means a thread about your product can shape what a chatbot says about you. A Peec study of about 30 million sources, published in March 2026, found Reddit ranked first or second on every engine it tested. That included ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews.

A login wall could change that, but not evenly. Here's why. Google and OpenAI have paid deals for Reddit data, so they may keep access. Tools without a deal may lose it, since Reddit says the wall is partly meant to stop scraping.

So the mix of sources in AI answers could shift, because if some AI tools can't read Reddit, they'll quote other forums, review sites and brand pages instead. That's a chance for brands with clear, honest and detailed pages of their own.

Our guide to citation optimization explains how AI tools pick sources, and our GEO and AEO strategy guide shows the bigger picture for brands that want to be quoted.

Should you still market on Reddit?

Yes, for most brands that fit Reddit's communities, but with a different goal. Think of Reddit as a place where buyers talk, not as free search traffic you can count on.

Reddit's ad business is growing fast. The company said ad clicks rose more than 50% and conversions more than tripled from a year earlier, per Yahoo Finance. These are Reddit's own figures, so test them against your own results before you shift budget.

Old approachBetter nowWhy

Plant brand mentions in threadsAnswer questions openly as your brandUsers and moderators punish hidden promotion
Skip Reddit adsTest a small Reddit ad budgetLogged-in users are easier to target
Track only Google rankTrack clicks, sales and AI citationsAI answers can name you without a click

A logged-in Reddit may also be a better ad audience. Signed-in users can be targeted more precisely, and they're the ones who read deeply. If your buyers are active in certain subreddits, that audience could be worth more, not less.

Organic work still matters too. Answer questions in your field honestly, say who you work for and follow each community's rules. Threads where real users mention you will still shape what AI tools learn, even if fewer people click them from Google.

How to check if Reddit search traffic changes affect you

You can run this check in about an hour, and it will show you how much your brand leans on Reddit today, both for traffic and for visibility in AI answers.

  • In your analytics, find referral visits from reddit.com for the last 90 days. Compare them with the same period last year and note the trend.
  • Check which pages those visits land on, and whether they convert as well as visits from Google or from your email list, since that tells you what the traffic is really worth.
  • In Search Console, look for queries that include the word "reddit". These show people who want real user opinions about your topic.
  • Search your top 20 product and comparison keywords in a private window. Note every Reddit thread on page one. AI Overviews too.
  • Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the same questions. Note whether they cite Reddit, your site or a rival, and check whether each answer describes your prices, features and main selling points the right way. Screenshot each answer.
  • Write it all down with dates, so you can see what changes once the login test starts.

If Reddit sends you little traffic and few AI answers cite it for your topics, you can relax, but if it sends a lot, plan for that traffic to shrink over the next year.

A simple example

Here's a made-up case to show how this works. A small coffee gear brand gets 8% of its site visits from Reddit. Most come from one popular thread about the best grinder under $200.

The team checks Google. The thread still ranks third for that search, but an AI Overview now sits above it. Visits from Reddit are down 30% from last year, while the brand's own sales from Google are flat.

Next, they ask three AI tools the same question. Two cite the Reddit thread, and one cites a rival's buying guide. None cites the brand's own site.

Their fix is to build the clearest grinder guide on the web, with real test data, prices and honest trade-offs. They also join the subreddit and answer questions openly. All numbers here are made up for illustration.

What not to do

Big news can push teams into quick moves that backfire. Avoid these:

  • Don't post fake reviews or pose as a happy customer. Reddit users and moderators spot it fast, and it can ban your brand and hurt your name for years.
  • Don't pay for upvotes or buy aged accounts to push threads. It breaks Reddit's rules.
  • Don't drop Reddit overnight, because your buyers may still read it every week, even if far fewer of them arrive there from a Google search.
  • Don't assume a login wall will remove Reddit from Google. Reddit hasn't said how search engines will be treated.
  • Don't pour all your effort into one platform you don't control. This news shows how fast a channel can change.

The lesson for every website

Reddit is one of the biggest sites on the web, and Google's AI answers still cut into its traffic. If it can happen to Reddit search traffic, it can happen to any site that depends on search clicks.

We covered the same trend from the search side in our guide to Google ranking volatility. There, AI Overviews showed up on most commercial searches, including 96% of the best X for Y searches that Semrush tracked, which are exactly the searches where buyers make up their minds. A page can hold its rank and still lose clicks.

The answer is to make your own site worth visiting and worth quoting. Give clear answers, real data and honest comparisons. Then measure clicks, sales and AI citations, not just rank. Our guide to answer engine optimization covers the basics.

What to watch next

A few things will show how this plays out over the next few months:

  • Which markets get the logged-in test first, and how strict it is.
  • Whether Reddit search traffic keeps falling once threads need a login to read.
  • Whether AI tools without a data deal stop citing Reddit.
  • Whether Reddit's daily users really fall by a low double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter, as it warned they might.
  • Whether Google responds to Huffman's claim with data on clicks from AI Mode.

Reddit reports its fourth-quarter results in early 2027. That report will show whether the decline kept going and how the login test went.

Reddit search traffic: our take

The Reddit search traffic drop is real, and Reddit's own filings show it. What's less clear is how much comes from AI Mode alone, since Reddit didn't break that out.

The login wall is the bigger change for marketers. It could shrink Reddit's reach in search and in some AI tools. And it would make Reddit more of a closed community and ad platform than an open library.

Our advice is calm and simple. Know how much you rely on Reddit, keep showing up honestly in the communities that matter to your buyers and make your own site the best answer you can.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Reddit search traffic drop in 2026?

Reddit says search referrals fell sharply in the third quarter of 2026, mostly because of Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. These features answer questions on Google's own page, so fewer people click through to Reddit threads. In October, Reddit averaged more than 1 million fewer search referrals a week.

Is Reddit going to require a login to read posts?

Reddit plans to test a logged-in-only experience in select markets outside the US in the fourth quarter of 2026. The results will shape a logged-in-only version for all markets, but Reddit hasn't given a date for the US or said how search engines will be treated.

How much did Reddit stock fall after earnings?

Reddit shares fell 29.22% on October 30, 2026, closing at $91.73, according to CNBC and market data. It was the stock's worst day since its 2024 listing. This is reporting, not investment advice.

Will Reddit still appear in ChatGPT and Google AI answers?

Probably in some. Google and OpenAI have paid data deals with Reddit, so they may keep access. AI tools without a deal may lose access if Reddit blocks logged-out reading, which could shift their citations to other sites.

Should brands stop marketing on Reddit?

No, but they should change the goal. Treat Reddit as a community and an ad channel where buyers talk, not as free search traffic. Keep posting honestly, test Reddit ads against your own results and make your own site the best answer for your key questions.

Google Ranking Volatility: What to Do When Rankings Swing

Google search rankings swung hard again on October 27, 2026, the fourth unconfirmed round of volatility in 11 days after earlier swings on October 16, October 20 and 21, and October 24. It came soon after the September 2026 spam update, which ran from September 24 to October 8. Google hasn't confirmed any of these rounds. At the same time, AI Overviews now appear on more than 80% of Google searches by Search Engine Roundtable's read of recent data, and a Semrush study found them on 88% of 400 tracked commercial keywords in August 2026, up from 45.75% a year earlier. Reading the swings is harder than usual because Ahrefs says Google shows altered results to suspected data scrapers, affecting 5% to 20% of results depending on the provider. Marketers should check Search Console before they react, avoid big site changes during an unconfirmed update and focus on review, comparison and best X for Y pages, where AI Overviews now show up most.
